Cooper Connolly has been called up to Australia’s Champions Trophy squad as a replacement for the injured Matt Short. This comes ahead of their semi-final match against India, where Australia may face a strong spin attack. Short sustained a quad injury during the match against Afghanistan and would not recover in time for the knockout games. Connolly, a 21-year-old left-handed batsman and spin bowler, was a reserve player and is ready to join the team immediately. He has played three ODIs and could be considered for selection, especially given Australia’s loss of Short’s off-spin.
If selectors decide to replace the opening batsman with a like-for-like player, Jake Fraser-McGurk is an option. Alternatively, if they aim to strengthen the spin attack, they might consider including Tanveer Sangha, adjusting the team’s balance.
Australia learned they would face India in the semi-final after New Zealand’s defeat in the last group stage match. Both Group B qualified teams – Australia and South Africa – traveled to Dubai to allow the team playing against India time to prepare. South Africa will now return to Lahore for their semi-final against New Zealand.
Leg-spinner Adam Zampa commented on the team’s hectic schedule, involving games in Pakistan and travel between cities. Zampa believes his role will be crucial in the semi-final, as the Dubai stadium favors spinners. In the match against New Zealand, India used spin bowling for 37.3 overs, with Varun Chakaravarthy taking 5 wickets. Zampa also mentioned that conditions in Pakistan and Dubai differ, and Dubai might offer slower and lower wickets, creating more opportunities for spinners.
Zampa admitted he has room for improvement in his own performance, despite taking wickets in previous matches. He emphasized his ability to contribute to the team and take important wickets even when not at his best. The last time Australia played India in an ODI was in the 2023 World Cup final. If they win the semi-final, Australia will return to Lahore for the final; otherwise, the final will be held in Dubai.
