James Rodriguez Hangs Up His Boots for Colombia After Three World Cups

During his international career, which began in late 2011, Rodriguez earned 131 caps for Colombia. He played in the 2024 Copa America final, where Colombia lost to Argentina after extra time. With 31 goals, he is the second-highest scorer in Colombian national team history, trailing Radamel Falcao by five goals.

Rodriguez reflected, "Since I debuted with the national team, I always had a clear vision: to leave this jersey higher than where I found it... I think I've achieved that."

His most notable World Cup appearance was in Brazil in 2014, where Colombia reached the quarterfinals for the first time in their history, losing to the host nation 2-1. Rodriguez was the tournament's top scorer with six goals, including a penalty against Brazil.

In the most recent World Cup in North America, he played in all five of Colombia's matches up to their Round of 16 exit against Switzerland on penalties, though he did not score.
