India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, has acknowledged the significant achievement of his team’s remarkable run in recent ICC tournaments. He pointed out that winning 23 out of 24 matches across the last three major ICC events and securing two trophies is a testament to the team’s exceptional quality and consistency.
Sharma emphasized that this sustained success is rare in cricket history. He highlighted that despite playing all Champions Trophy matches in Dubai, India faced varied and challenging conditions in the 2023 World Cup (held in India) and the previous T20 World Cup which they won.
In the 2023 World Cup, India played across nine different venues, only losing the final to Australia. In the T20 World Cup, they began with matches in New York and then played across five different venues for the remaining games, showcasing their adaptability and resilience.
Describing India’s 23 wins as a “great, great milestone,” Rohit credited the team’s depth, mutual understanding, and enthusiasm. He admitted the disappointment of losing the ODI World Cup final but celebrated their T20 World Cup victory and subsequent Champions Trophy win.
Sharma noted the external pressure and speculation that surround the Indian team, but praised the players for focusing on winning and enjoying the game. He believes this positive mindset has been crucial to their success over the past few years.
Looking at the more recent period of 2024 and 2025, India boasts an unbeaten record of 13 wins in 13 matches across formats. While MS Dhoni led India to all limited-overs ICC trophies, his teams never achieved two consecutive ICC tournament wins or remained undefeated throughout a tournament except for the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Rohit hailed the two consecutive ICC trophy wins as a “great team achievement,” especially remaining undefeated. He mentioned that few teams have accomplished this, attributing their success to effectively utilizing the playing conditions. He concluded by stating their focus is on maintaining their current approach and performance.
Sharma also lauded the versatility of the team, where almost every player has made valuable contributions throughout the tournament. He highlighted that success comes from collective contributions, not just individual brilliance. In this tournament, both bowlers and batsmen have stepped up to win games.
He emphasized the “hunger and passion” within the team, considering these intrinsic qualities as vital to their continued success.
