Salman Ali Agha has committed to a ‘fearless cricket’ style as he takes on the T20I captaincy for Pakistan, becoming the fourth captain since January 2024. He succeeds Mohammad Rizwan for the New Zealand tour, following Shaheen Shah Afridi and Babar Azam.

Pakistan’s performance has been underwhelming, notably their early exit from the T20 World Cup after losing to the USA. This has led to significant team changes, bringing in new players and omitting some experienced ones.

Key among those omitted are Rizwan and Babar, whose cautious batting approach has been criticized as outdated. While their T20I careers aren’t over, they have been dropped, not rested.

“It’s an honor and a challenge,” Agha stated in Lahore. “We’ve included young players who demonstrate the aggressive cricket we aim to implement at the national level.”

“Our focus must be on intent and approach, crucial in modern cricket. This young team will play fearlessly, embracing high-risk cricket, essential in today’s game. Failures are expected, but player support is vital.”

The PCB appointed Agha captain with an eye on the upcoming Asia Cup (T20 format) and the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year. Shadab Khan returns as vice-captain, aligned with this aggressive strategy.

Interim head coach Aaqib Javed explained, “Shadab’s return is due to his captaincy experience and aggressive mindset, complementing Agha’s approach. Their combination is beneficial.”

Aaqib continues as selection head for the New Zealand series. He linked Babar and Rizwan’s exclusion to the desired change in Pakistan’s playing style.

“No one is permanently excluded, but currently, we prioritize younger players and a different cricket style. Many teams differentiate their T20 squads significantly.”

The absence of Afridi and Haris Rauf from the ODI squad further indicates significant changes. Aaqib suggested they need domestic cricket to improve.

“Top players often miss domestic cricket due to travel. Now, they have the opportunity. Playing four-day cricket is essential for Test and ODI improvement. Continuous T20 cricket isn’t sufficient for other formats.”

“Players must consider their game and direction. Should they sacrifice T20s to regain form in longer formats?”

Agha and Aaqib aim to develop a pool of 20-25 players over the next 18 months, emphasizing consistent support through successes and failures.

Aaqib acknowledged the instability in Pakistan cricket, noting, “Nearly 16 coaches and 26 selectors in two years impact any team. Consistency from top to bottom is crucial for progress.”
