Sophie Luff has been announced as the inaugural professional captain for Somerset Women as they enter a new chapter in the Women’s County competition.
Luff, aged 31, began her cricketing journey in Somerset’s youth teams before debuting for the senior women’s side in 2009. Her impressive record includes 2330 runs in 74 List A matches with a top score of 138 not out, and 1675 runs in 68 T20 games.
Having previously led the county from 2017 to 2022, and Western Storm from 2020, Luff brings a wealth of leadership experience.
She holds the distinction of being the first player to play 100 games for Western Storm, amassing over 1760 List A runs at an average of 50.54, with a highest score of 157 not out. In T20s for Storm, she scored 850 runs.
Luff’s career also includes representing England at the Academy, Development, and Under-19 levels, as well as playing for Welsh Fire, London Spirit, and Southern Brave in The Hundred.
“Returning to Somerset feels like coming home,” Luff stated. “I am thrilled to lead this talented group and incredibly proud to be the first professional captain of my home club. It’s a huge honor for me.”
She added, “Somerset County Cricket Club is deeply significant to me. I grew up watching legends here and developed my passion for cricket at this ground. I am committed to setting high standards for Somerset Women’s cricket.”
